ASCCA’s Campus Is Both Therapeutic and Educational This Weekend
This weekend, Camp ASCCA is hosting Atlanta’s Shepherd Center for their Adventure Skills Workshop. The weekend is not, however, beneficial just for those with disabilities. Students majoring in recreational therapy from East Carolina University and the University of South Alabama are here gaining hands-on experience in the therapeutic recreation field.
…everyone was amazed
to see a participant slalom-ski at the waterfront activities…
Dr. David Loy, professor of Recreational Therapy at ECU, has been involved with Shepherd Center and coming to Camp ASCCA for 15 years, and he has been bringing his students along for 6 years. This weekend is part of a summer program that is an elective course in which the students learn how to use equipment and handle situations that they would not encounter in a classroom setting.
The ECU and USA students, mostly juniors and seniors, are learning to transport people from wheelchairs to water skis, inner tubes, and even ATVs. According to Dr. Loy, this helps them learn the extent of the participants’ abilities and limitations. Yesterday, everyone was amazed to see a participant slalom-ski at the waterfront activities! Everyone, including staff, students, and participants, is learning a great deal this weekend about therapeutic recreation as well as having a fabulous time outdoors at Camp ASCCA.
