About Camp ASCCA
The Easter Seals Camp ASCCA Mission is to help eligible individuals with disabilities and/or health impairments achieve equality, dignity, and maximum independence through a safe and quality program of camping, recreation, and education in a year-round barrier-free environment.
Our goal is to serve those who can derive maximum benefit from the resident camp experience and provide a healthier, happier, longer, and more productive life for children and adults of all abilities.
Camp ASCCA means fun for the 7,000+ visitors who spend time at the facility each year. Campers who have disabilities ranging from Spina Bifida, Multiple Sclerosis, Paraplegia, and Quadriplegia to Downs Syndrome, Autism, Mild, Moderate and Profound Mental Disabilities enjoy unique camping experiences at Camp ASCCA.
In Camp ASCCA’s 33 year history, services have been provided to thousands of people with disabilities. During this time, thousands of individuals, clubs, companies and organizations have made the camps unique services available.
Who has helped build the camp? Many people and organizations from Alabama Power Company’s donation of 230 acres of lakefront property to the Mobile Rotary Foundation’s sponsorship of 100 campers each summer, caring individuals continue to make a difference in the lives of people with disabilities at Camp ASCCA. Together with the campers…our supporters are our lifeline and we say, “Thank You!”
Camp ASCCA is open year-round. It is host to many special guests throughout the year, and enjoys partnerships with other groups who are also making a difference in the lives of people with disabilities.
Additionally, this journal/website is an ongoing chronicle of the life of Camp ASCCA. Our camp operates year-round serving a very diverse population. In fact, when we write about “our camp” we are actually writing about several facilities. ASCCA is a combined effort of the main original camp site, the Dadeville campus and the environmental education center. Within those three are a demonstration farm, two lakefront facilities, equestrian facilities and more.
We will focus on people - their work (and passion for that work) and the relationships that exist in a myriad of interactions. We have teacher/pupil relationships in the camper/counselor and program/participant areas. Strong friendships form and grow in camp’s daily activities, too. Those will all be chronicled here, too.
Most important of all, we will record and share the accomplishments of all the members of the Camp ASCCA family. Campers achieving new goals and the counselors that take them to those new heights.
The people blogging here will encompass all of the staff, but will primarily be done by our interns (who change each semester) and by Robert French, Allison Wetherbee, and Dana Rickman. Bios and email contact info can be found on our staff directory page.
