2012 Camper of the Year is Sam Sullivan!

Sam is a 22 year old young man from Birmingham, Alabama. He’s attended summer camp at Camp ASCCA for many years and participated in many other weekend Camp ASCCA camps as well. His family reports that he likes books, music, and socializing. They also report that he LOVES different cultural interests such as ancient Egypt, Samurai warriors/Japan, Greek music and other classic music.

Speaking of Samurai warriors… Sam came to us with the nickname Samurai Sam. As stated before, he loves Samurai warriors and Japanese culture. Knowing this, very often Samurai Sam completes “program tasks” such as going down the zip-line or riding a horse under the instruction of his “sensei”. Involving his “Samurai training” during activity participation really encourages Sam and he has a great time!

Camp Director Matt Rickman says that “he is an obvious staff and fellow camper favorite and that is why he was chosen as Camper of the Year.” Staff member Amber Cotney adds that he’s “fantastic, hilarious, and loves everything he does,” and “is the epitome of an ASCCA camper in that he gets something out of the camp experience and gives back to others without even realizing it.”

The Camper of the Year award recipient is chosen annually at the end of the summer camp sessions by the summer staff members. It’s a hard choice to make, to say the least, as we love all of our campers deeply.

Sam was recognized at a special dinner in his hometown on November 9, 2012. Full-time and summer staff members attended the dinner and surprised him with their attendance and award! Sam was presented with a special recognition plaque and news that he will attend Camp ASCCA’s annual Christmas Weekend for free!
