The Camp ASCCA Camper of the Year is chosen each summer by the summer staff. The staff nominates ten campers, and after those are voted on, the Camper of the Year is chosen from the top three. The staff members individually consider campers and what make each one special to them.
Many consider qualities such as how much someone enjoys the camp experience, how they encourage other campers, friendliness, openness, happiness, eagerness, and overall enthusiasm, just to give a few examples.
Nigel Davis, the 2014 Camper of the Year, possesses all of these qualities! Nigel is a first time camper in 2014 and actually was able to attend two camp sessions. He was first sponsored by the Demopolis Rotary Club and was encouraged to attend summer camp by his high school principal. He was later invited to attend the Right Moves Sports Camp, sponsored by Auburn Adaptive Sports.
Over 20 fans of Nigel made up of Camp ASCCA staff members, family members, and Demopolis Rotarians (including his high school principal), met at the Tally-Ho Restaurant in Selma, AL in November to surprise him. He was greeted by all then given a plaque recognizing him as Camp ASCCA’s 2014 Camper of the Year.
As part of this recognition, Nigel will attend the Camp ASCCA Christmas Weekend in December free of charge and once again experience the fun and unique experiences that Camp ASCCA has to offer people with disabilities. But really the best gift of the weekend is that the staff and volunteers get to be blessed to be with Nigel and the wonderful gifts HE has to offer!
