At the end of Session 6, Camp Director Matt Rickman was prepared to announce this year’s Judy Williams Scholarship recipient. On Friday, summer staff members met with Matt and the full-time staff to discuss the highs and lows of the summer, say farewell to a few staff members, and learn who would receive this year’s scholarship.
Throughout the summer, the summer leadership staff and full-time staff members observe counselors and program staff members in the camp environment. At the end of the summer, an individual is chosen based on their passion and attentiveness for the campers, their hard work, and their resiliency throughout the seven weeks. The recipient is then presented with the Judy Williams Scholarship of $500.
On Friday afternoon, Matt Rickman spoke about this year’s recipient having those exact characteristics mentioned, and he presented the 2017 Judy Williams Scholarship to Counselor Matt Smith of Alexander City. Matt is a student at Berry College and has worked at Camp ASCCA for two summers as a counselor.
The Judy Williams Scholarship has been presented to an ASCCA staff member every summer since 2014. The scholarship is provided by Judy Williams who has served Camp ASCCA in a variety of ways since being on staff during Camp’s first summer in 1976.
