The Judy Williams Scholarship is given every year to a summer staff member chosen based on his or her energy and enthusiasm during work, attentiveness towards campers, and resiliency through a hot Alabama summer. The recipient is selected by the leadership staff that is made up of unit leaders, head counselors, and full-time staff members, he or she is later presented with a scholarship of $500. The award was first given out in 2014 and had been given to a counselor every year since until this summer.
On Friday, Camp Director Matt Rickman presented the award to Nature Director Lance Chayka. Lance is a Jackson’s Gap native and a Dadeville High School graduate, so it is safe to say that he grew up pretty familiar with Camp ASCCA. He has served four previous summers as a Counselor-In-Training and Senior Counselor-In-Training. Lance was chosen to be this year’s recipient based on his hard work to make his nature program the best it has ever been and for his kindness and care towards every camper that he encounters. He has been an indispensable part of our team this year, and we could not pick a better recipient for this year’s scholarship.
At the end of the summer, Lance will be attending Southern Union Community College to begin working towards a degree in Civil Engineering. Lance is joining a strong list of Judy Williams Scholarship recipients that includes Gordon Warner, Brett Gray, Christian Thomason, and Matt Smith.
