One of the newest members of aquatics staff, Macy Brown, discovered ASCCA through Camp Seale Harris like Aubrie Collins. We asked her a few questions about the challenges of living with diabetes in our interview. Here’s what she had to say:
What’s your name and age and where are you from?
I’m Macy Brown, I’m 18 and I’m from Prattville, AL.
When were you diagnosed with type I diabetes and how did it affect you and your family?
I was diagnosed when I was 5 years old. It did not affect my family and me. It only made us stronger and closer.
How did camp Seale-Harris affect you growing up?
Camp Seale-Harris affected me growing up by being my extended family and encouraging me.
What are some of the biggest challenges you have faced living with diabetes?
The biggest challenge that I have faced living with diabetes is not being able to eat all the chocolate foods.
Why is it important for families affected by diabetes to participate or send their kids to camp (like Seale-Harris)?
It is important for families affected by diabetes to participate or send their kids to camp because you will meet other kids with diabetes. In addition, the staff provides great care to the campers and teaches kids how to give insulin independently.
What has living with diabetes taught you more than anything?
Living with diabetes has taught me to be more independent and take better care of myself.
And finally, now that you’re a part of ASCCA staff, what are you looking forward to most for this summer?
Now that I am finally part of ASCCA Staff what I am looking forward to the most this summer is being a good influence and making memories.
