A Lesson from Philanthropy 101

What an amazing summer course Lee-Scott Academy has come up with for its rising seniors who choose to participate – Philanthropy 101.

The class is a three-week summer program at Lee-Scott Academy that brings the principles of philanthropy to life. Students become more keenly aware of society’s growing needs and begin to develop the understanding, desire, and instincts for philanthropic service. Through classroom learning and hands-on experiences, the course helps students answer questions such as, “Who am I in relationship to my community” In what ways can I give? How can I make a difference?”

Real-world learning is central to the course and students visit a variety of nonprofit agencies and foundations and hear speakers from a number of charitable organizations.

The nine participants from the class visited Camp ASCCA this June. Evidently we made an impact, because two of the students, Campbell Kraft and Kelsey Kavookjian chose Camp ASCCA as their organization to support.

Each student is awarded $700 each to give to their organization of choice. Kelsey chose to sponsor a summer camper from Lee County, and Campbell chose to fund the purchase of adapted personal flotation devices that several summer campers have recommended!

We appreciate these fine young ladies and look forward to seeing them at camp this summer when they visit to see the results of their generosity!

We also must note that the Philanthropy 101 class is funded by The W. James Samford, Jr. Foundation. The late Mr. Samford’s sister, Lucinda Cannon, had heard of a similar class at a prep school in Atlanta and wanted to bring the idea home to benefit the students of Lee-Scott Academy. Many thanks also go out to the Directors of the Samford Foundation.
