An archaeological find!

We have been renovating the cabins at Camp ASCCA. We completed the boys cabins last winter, and have started on the girls cabins this week. Take a look at what one of our staff members found when removing some of the drawers and a cabinet! These are some sort of “membership cards” from our first summer in 1976.

One of the signatures on the cards belongs to Camp ASCCA’s first camp director, Bert Emmons. We asked him if these cards might be similar to our current way of honoring excellence in camping programs – “ASCCA Achievements”…

“I don’t remember specifically, but I doubt that these were like your ‘ASCCA Achievements.’ More likely they’re just a sort of testimonial to the facts that 1) we knew kids like to belong and having a membership card was validation of that, 2) we knew that kids like taking things home, and this was something they could take with them (even though she left hers behind!!), and 3) boy, were we on a budget – these look like they were probably construction paper or something, huh?” [yes, they are made of very well-preserved construction paper!]

Judy Williams also signed the cards. She was a counselor that first summer and remembers the camper, Rosalind. She said Rosalind “had red hair and LOTS of freckles!!” Judy still volunteers for Camp ASCCA on the advisory board and arranges many special times at summer camp, like bringing the pace car from Talladega Superspeedway!

Pretty cool. See more of the “membership cards” on our Facebook page.
