Archery was a free choice activity today for session 4. Jon Dollar, our program staff shooting specialist, greeted our campers, then explained the activity and rules. Jon just finished studying biology at Jefferson State Community College and plans on returning to school. Last year Jon was a counselor for his first summer at ASCCA, and was asked to apply for program staff this year. He had the opportunity to change up his role and is doing a great job as program staff with his previous experience. His favorite thing about camp is the friendships he’s made with campers and staff and how they continue to build each year.
At archery we have 3 types of bows the campers can shoot with, a recurve bow, an adaptive bow and our new crossbow! The crossbow is new this year and was just debuted during session 3. Our Barnett 30 pound resistant youth crossbow was donated to us by David Sullivan of the Tuscaloosa Buckmasters. They are also planning to send us compound bows, and we have already received a compound bow mount to place on wheelchairs. Thank you Tuscaloosa Buckmasters for our new equipment!
Our campers each chose their bow, then aimed to shoot at the balloons on the target. Each of our campers popped at least one balloon! Archery was a great choice today for free choice, we had so much fun shooting and cheering each other on.
