Archery Afternoon

While waiting for their scheduled time at horseback riding, zip tower, or boat rides, campers went to a free choice activity of their choosing like archery. Our Shooting Sports Director Leah Tingle brought out all three of ASCCA’s types of bows: the compound bow, the adapted bow, and our new crossbow.

The compound bow, which camp has both a right and left handed version of, gives campers the classic bow shooting experience by pulling back the taut strings and releasing the arrow. The adapted bow gives this same experience, but is mounted horizontally for ease of pulling the string back. The newest addition to ASCCA’s archery program is the crossbow. Leah sets up the crossbow for the camper and makes sure they are able to hold up its weight. Even if they need help supporting the crossbow, the camper aims the bow for him or herself. This bow is much easier since the campers only need to pull a trigger to shoot the arrow.

The archery range is set up with targets, balloons, and a fake deer. The range must be deemed clear by a counselor before each shot a camper takes. Archery has many other safety precautions like arm guards and a gate keeping campers and counselors a safe distance away while waiting their turn. During their wait, campers and counselors use free choice activities like archery to talk and joke with others that aren’t in their rotation groups for the week.

As the afternoon went on, more and more campers showed up to shoot, some returning more than once to have another try at the targets. Be sure to check our Flickr for more photos of archery and of our other free choice activities from today!
