On Sunday, counselors, program staff, full-time staff, nurses, and pr staff picked up campers from the Goodwill Easterseals of the Gulf Coast in Mobile, Alabama, and brought them to Camp ASCCA! The Camp ASCCA staff drove down to Saraland on Saturday afternoon and stayed the night to be ready to sign-in campers early Sunday morning.
Sign-in was run just like it would have in Jackson’s Gap. The campers and the people dropping them off were greeted by program staff and counselors at their cars as the campers’ names were written on their luggage in order to keep everything organized. They were then directed towards a smaller version of the camp store, to pick up the camper’s nametag, to put on the camper’s wristband, to make sure all information was correct and get checked by a nurse.
Campers waited in a big room with their families and/or caregivers until all of the campers arrived so that they could load up the buses and head to Mobile. PR intern Karla was able to speak with several parents about how Camp ASCCA has changed their lives and the lives of their children. One camper, Melissa Turbyfill proclaimed that she feels “normal” at Camp ASCCA and that there aren’t many places that make her feel that way. The testimonials from families are what motivate the ASCCA staff to continue doing what they’re doing.
The drive to Camp ASCCA was smooth and quick! Campers sang all of the camp songs they could remember all the way to camp and were repeatedly asking “Are we there yet?” Once the buses hit Camp ASCCA Drive, campers and counselors sang even louder and talked about how excited they were to finally arrive! The staff that did not go on the trip, awaited the buses and cheered them on as they drove in. The staff helped unload the buses and took the luggage to their respective cabin. Campers were taken to the gym where they finally got to meet the counselor they had been thinking about for four hours! Hugs were given and excitement filled the area!
The campers are pumped to finally be at CAMP ASCCA and the staff couldn’t be happier that they’re here. This is going to be an eventful week, keep up with what’s going on at camp by following our Flickr, Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram pages!
