As we continue celebrating Camp ASCCA’s 50th year in operation, we’re taking a look back at another space that has become an important part of the camper experience: the ballfield.
The history of the ballfield began in 1982, when the 877th Engineer Battalion of the Alabama Army National Guard began clearing the area. What started as a newly cleared space would soon become a place where generations of campers could gather, play, and make memories.

In 1987, lights and fencing were added to the ballfield thanks to the generosity of the Woodmen of the World. These additions helped further develop the space and expand the opportunities available to campers.
Years later, in 2012, the ballfield underwent another transformation. The space was renovated and rededicated as a sports field, becoming known as “Lee’s Field” in memory of Lee Eiland Kravitz. Lee’s family and friends donated more than $13,500 in her memory to make these updates possible.
Today, the ballfield continues to be used regularly at Camp ASCCA. During the summer, campers can be found there participating in archery, slingshots, team-building activities, and so much more.

Over the years, the ballfield has continued to grow and change, just like Camp ASCCA. What began as a piece of land being cleared more than 40 years ago has become a space filled with activity, laughter, friendship, and countless memories.
As we look back on 50 years of Camp ASCCA, we’re grateful for the people and organizations who helped create and improve the spaces that make camp what it is today. The ballfield is just one example of how the generosity and support of so many have helped make a lasting impact on generations of campers.
