We’re still looking back on the history of Camp ASCCA and the places, people, and moments that have helped make Camp what it is today. One place that has been an important part of Camp ASCCA since the very beginning is the pool.
For generations of campers, the pool has been a place to swim, float, cool off, and make memories during the heart of the summer. Aquatics has always been a favorite part of the Camp ASCCA experience, giving campers the opportunity to enjoy the water in a safe, accessible, and welcoming environment.
In 1975, the Alabama Society for Crippled Children and Adults (Easterseals Alabama) Tallapoosa County Chapter swimming pool was completed, giving campers a place to enjoy the water even before Camp ASCCA officially welcomes its first campers in 1976.
In 1994, the original pool was replaced with a new, fully accessible therapeutic swimming pool, sponsored by the Alexander City Rotary Club. The new pool continued Camp ASCCA’s commitment to providing recreational opportunities that are accessible to all campers.
Over the years, the pool has continued to receive updates and improvements. In 2014, it was repaired and resurfaced to keep it in good condition for the campers who use it each summer.
Then, in 2017, a shade structure was added to provide campers and staff with a place to get out of the sun while enjoying the pool. That same year, the pool pump broke, leading to a large fundraising campaign to quickly raise the money needed for a replacement.
Nearly 50 years later, the pool remains an important part of the Camp ASCCA experience. From the first swimmers in the 1970s to the campers enjoying the water today, it has a place for fun, connection, and countless camp memories.
