ASCCA Archives: The Waterslide

As we celebrate Camp ASCCA’s 50th summer, we’re taking a look back at one of the most exciting additions to camp: the Waterslide.

Opened in the spring of 2010, Camp ASCCA’s waterslide provides a thrilling and accessible experience for campers of all abilities. Located behind the Chapel and overlooking Lake Martin, the 100-foot slide was uniquely designed at ground level, making transfers for non-ambulatory campers safer and easier than on a traditional elevated waterslide.

The project was made possible through the generosity of many individuals and organizations, with major support from the Alabama Elks Association, Montgomery Kiwanis Club, The Daniel Foundation, The Ability Experience, and the Alabama State Association of Emblem Clubs.

In addition to the slide itself, an outdoor game room was constructed at the base of the hill, giving campers a place to gather and enjoy activities such as table tennis, giant checkers, cornhole, and shuffleboard. This space was generously funded by Alabama District Pilot International.

Volunteers from Pi Kappa Phi’s The Ability Experience also played an important role in the project by constructing the accessible ramp leading to the top of the slide and the viewing deck at the bottom.

For more than 15 years, the waterslide has been a favorite activity for campers, offering excitement, laughter, and memorable experiences. It continues to serve as a shining example of Camp ASCCA’s commitment to providing accessible recreation opportunities for all.

Stay tuned for future editions of ASCCA Archives as we continue exploring the people, places, and programs that have shaped Camp ASCCA over the past 50 years.
