ASCCA Archives: Where Adventure Meets Accessibility

For 50 years, Camp ASCCA’s adventure areas have given campers the opportunity to try new things, challenge themselves, and discover what they can do. From climbing towers to ziplining over the pond, these activities have created countless memories and moments of accomplishment for campers of all abilities.

The ropes adventure area began in the early 1980s with a treehouse, zipline, ropes course, and a climbing and rappelling tower. A low elements course was added soon after, giving campers even more opportunities to work together and take on new challenges. In the early 1990s, a new treehouse was built near the lakefront area.

In 2001, the Levy-Roswal Adventure Course Area was constructed, bringing updated challenge and team-building activities to Camp. That same year, the Zip Tower was built. Standing 35 feet tall, the tower gives campers the opportunity to climb before taking a ride on the zipline. In 2003, a traverse tower was added to make the Zip Tower more accessible.

The adventure area continued to grow in 2018 with the addition of the LPR Zipline at the pond. Named in honor of donors Levy, Perkins, and Roswal, this zipline offers an 800-foot ride over the three-acre pond. It remains another way for campers to experience the excitement of outdoor adventure at Camp ASCCA.

Over the years, the Outdoor Adventure Program has been led by several specialists who have helped make these experiences possible. From Eric Bailey in 1992 to Tre Marbury in 2022, each has played a part in building a program that encourages campers to step outside their comfort zones, support one another, and celebrate what they can accomplish.

While the equipment and adventure areas have changed over the years, the heart of the program has stayed the same. Whether it is a first climb, a ride down the zipline, or the excitement of trying something new, these experiences remind campers that adventure is for everyone.
