‘Twas a weekend to remember at this year’s ASCCA Christmas Weekend. Campers, staff and volunteers arrived Friday afternoon, and everyone was ready for the fun to begin. Once all the campers had arrived, everyone headed to the cabins to unpack and prepare for the holiday festivities. Friday night’s dinner was followed by Christmas crafts and holiday cookie decorating, and we even had a special visit from Santa Claus himself. As always, he was a big hit, and everyone had the chance to get a picture with him.
Saturday morning came early, but everyone was excited for the activities ahead. The schedule consisted of free choice activities like a campfire, bingo and a putt-putt tournament. It rained for a little while, so almost everyone paid a visit to the dining hall for bingo. After the morning’s programs, it was time for a tasty barbecue lunch prepared by the ASCCA Kitchen Staff. Then, everyone made their way back to the cabins to enjoy a couple hours of rest before the fourth annual Jingle Jump.
By 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, Jingle Jumpers began to arrive at the swimming pool to sign in for the big jump. Campers and volunteers circled the pool to enjoy what was a chilling, good time. This year, we had 51 jumpers raising money for the ASCCA Campership Fund, and we were able to raise more than $48,000. That’s the most we have raised since the inaugural Jingle Jump fundraiser a few years ago. Campers cheered for counselors, full-time staff and other ASCCA supporters who made the leap.
After the Jingle Jump, we all made our way to the dining hall for a special Christmas dinner that was provided by the Alabama Elks Association. The menu included hamburger steak, green beans and a baked potato, and we cannot forget to mention the incredible table full of desserts provided by several members of the local community. It was all perfectly delicious!
Dinner was followed by a holiday concert in the gym with the band, To The 9s, and the room was filled with Christmas trees and a spectacular lighting display. The band performed old and new popular hits throughout the night like Meghan Trainor’s “All About that Bass” and Bob Seger’s “Old Time Rock and Roll.” Campers and staff danced the night away along with a few holiday characters who made their way through the crowd.
No one was ready for the weekend to end on Sunday morning, but we had one more event up our sleeves. Parents were even invited to arrive early and enjoy the final activity of the weekend, the holiday talent show. Campers signed up to perform their favorite holiday hits and other popular tunes. It was an exciting opportunity to connect parents a little closer to what we do here at ASCCA, and everyone left with big smiles full of holiday cheer.
We’d like to thank all of our campers, staff, volunteers and donors who continue to make ASCCA Christmas Weekend better and better every year!
