Last weekend, there was an energy throughout Camp ASCCA that could be described as nothing short of spooktacular. On Friday afternoon, campers arrived for the annual ASCCA Fall Family Weekend, and several families were also in attendance with their campers. According to the local weather station, the weekend was expected to be a chilly one with a Saturday morning of rain. It definitely ended up being unusually cold for an October weekend, but campers were reminded to bring a warm set of clothes so that there was nothing keeping them from having the time of their lives.
On Friday night, campers and families enjoyed a special dinner of hamburger steak, veggies, and cake to celebrate the announcement of the 2017 Camper of the Year. Camp Director Matt Rickman presented this year’s award to Cale Galloway after he was selected at the end of Summer 2017 by his peers. Later, everyone gathered together at the OutPost after dinner for an evening of Halloween fun with snacks and treats. The path to the OutPost was lit up with glow sticks and lined with spider webs, ghosts, and much more. Everyone headed to their cabins for the night with an excitement for the things to come Saturday morning because there was a chance of a morning talent show if the rain arrived at breakfast.
Saturday morning came with a chill and a pretty consistent rainfall, but that did not stop ASCCA Fall Family Weekend for one second. The weekend came with a “Rainy Day Plan” of a morning talent show and afternoon free choice. At breakfast, campers were encouraged to sign up for the talent show and share their favorite performance with their closest ASCCA friends. The show lasted for more than two hours and was made up of incredible performances to popular country, rock, and pop hits and even a few comedic segments. We could not have asked for a better morning heading into a cold afternoon.
After lunch, everyone headed back to the cabins to warm up and enjoy a rest period before the free choice activities began. However, while rest period ended the rain did not, so outdoor free choice activities were limited, but a few warmer options were added. The schedule consisted of programs at zip line, arts and crafts, nature, and activities in the game room. By 4:30 p.m., everyone was ready to head back in to the cabins and get ready for the Halloween dance. Everyone came to the dance in their best Halloween costumes and each cabin later entered a representative from their cabin into the weekend’s costume contest. After several hours of dancing, the costume contest came down to three representatives from Crow, Roberts Lodge, and Chickasaw. This year’s costume winner was Patricia Dean from Chickasaw cabin dressed as a clown. Second and third place were filled by Daniel Modawell as Thor and Brody Brooks as a scary reaper.
Before the weekend could end, campers and families were scheduled to enjoy one more round of free choice activities on Sunday at zip line, fishing, arts & crafts, and nature. The most popular activity of the morning was the nature activity at the campfire where campers were able to enjoy s’mores with their friends. After the final lunch of the weekend, check out began, and campers headed home to warm up from a fangtastic, chilling weekend at Camp ASCCA.
