This week for Session 7, we welcomed one of our campers, Chris Smith. He has been coming to Camp for many years, but this summer was extra special. His sister, Bethany Smith, is a counselor at ASCCA this year. Family connections are one of our favorite outcomes of Camp’s influence.
In a conversation with Bethany and Chris, she explained that her parents were skeptical about sending her and her brother to sleep-away camps when they were growing up. When her parents found ASCCA, they trusted this place and its people to take care of Chris and love him like their own. The story continued when their parents discovered Seal Harris, a camp for children and youth with diabetes that is hosted at Camp ASCCA.
Bethany shared that she was so excited to be at Camp ASCCA at the same time as her brother. While she is not his counselor, it has been such a sweet sight to see their interactions together. We held our final talent show last night, and Chris performed a song for us. Bethany looked at him with glee and pride in her eyes. It was a sweet moment.
