January 12-14th, we hosted the ASCCA Winter Hunt. This event is a unique opportunity for our campers and staff alike. We had two campers sign up, two summer staff members, and various volunteers participate in this hunt.
Campers, staff, and volunteers arrived Friday evening. After getting settled they made their way to the dining hall for dinner. After dinner, we welcomed two game wardens for a safety course. The wardens gave insight and direction about hunter safety, gun safety, and wood safety and answered any questions our participants had. After the safety course, we had a campfire with s’mores before calling it a night to rest up for our big day.
Outdoor Education Specialist Justin Hammers worked extensively before and during the hunt to ensure that each participant found the best hunting location. There were three hunts during the weekend, Saturday morning, Saturday evening, and Sunday morning.
Our campers and staff got lucky in the field this year. They harvested two does and one buck. For one of our campers, this was his first time hunting, and it was memorable!
This weekend would not have been possible if it had not been for our staff and volunteers. Our volunteers not only gave their time but also generously gave to Camp ASCCA as well. Jamey Ackley, a volunteer who has been around Camp ASCCA for 30-some years, donated 1,000 pounds of corn and built a shooting house while he was here. Stephen Feather, another volunteer, helped guide during the hunt and donated orange safety vests and deer calls.
