Autism Family Weekend Spring 2017

On Friday, May 5^th, families arrived for a weekend of activities and family fun that was completely sensory friendly for children with autism. Many of the families attending have been coming for several years, but this year we also had a few new families attend. Most of the families were from the Huntsville area and were participating in the program, Making Connections, that is a networking group of the Autism Society of Alabama. It is a great opportunity for parents and children to interact with families that are similar to theirs and enjoy a weekend with an overload of fun.

It was a rainy afternoon on Friday, so after check-in and dinner, the group joined together for a few games of basketball, ping pong, and a Disney movie, instead of the scheduled campfire and s’mores. Saturday morning, everyone woke up to beautiful weather and a schedule full of activities for the whole family. The families were split into three groups that rotated around camp to the zip line, boat rides, and canoeing. Then, after lunch everyone enjoyed a shaved ice party at the new OutPost, and they were the first group to visit the activity area since its opening a couple weeks ago.

Saturday evening involved a yummy dinner and a few rotations of free choice activities like disk golf, fishing, panning for gold, and much more. After a night of good rest, parents and campers awoke to one more rotation of activities on Sunday and the opportunity to buy some of ASCCA’s new summer gear. That means that you should be on the lookout for some of our new shirts and decals in the Huntsville area and get excited because summer is only a few more weeks away.
