Yesterday we had the first annual ASCCApalooza! The artists that made the festival extra special were members of Birmingham based “creative artist development academy” Nashville Bound, Charity Bowden, Jackson Capps, and Sweet Tea Trio. They were all great on stage, danced with campers before and after their performances, and took pictures with everyone that asked for some! But what are the artists like beyond the lights?
Gabrielle Metz, Will Haynes and Kailey Hobin were the first to hit the stage last night! They are all members of Nashville Bound. Gabrielle is from South Side, Alabama. She ran cross country and track and field at Southside High School. Will Haynes loves performing in front of large crowds of people! Kailey Horbin was so excited to be at ASCCApalooza!
Charity Bowden was the next to hit the stage! She was full of energy and loved dancing with campers after her performance. Charity told one of our PR interns, Clayton, about her cousin Will that was born with cerebral palsy and another family member with down syndome. She’s been singing since she was little and then began competing in pageants in order to get over her stage fright. She is just writing songs and playing in different places for different people for fun until something serious comes her way! She described performing with the words “mind-blowing” and “exhilarating!”
Charity was also joined by Nashville Bound veteran Hollye Horton. Hollye performed her own original song, “Alabama Woman.” She is from Adamsville, Alabama, and is a recent homeschool graduate. After performing, Hollye joined many of our campers for special photographs at the Volkswagen bus that was on-site at the event. Her music can be found on ReverbNation.
The next person to hit the stage was Jackson Capps! He was involved with a group in high school that organized a prom, field day, and flag football tournament for people with disabilities. He received his first guitar when he was eight and he was drawn to music ever since! He began performing in Nashville, Tennessee, when he was eleven years old and has build up from there. He said he’s still learning how to feed off of the energy from the crowd in order to help the crowd enjoy his performances even more.
The Sweet Tea Trio, the last band to perform last night consisted of Savannah Coker, Kate Flacon, and Victoria Camp. They began as individual artists but after working with the Nashville Bound program, they became a group of girls, but more importantly best friends. They have all performed at events benefiting people with disabilties. Victoria told PR Intern Clayton that she has a brother that has autism so performing at events like ASCCApalooza really hit home for her. Kate said that the most fun shows to perform at are the ones that people get up and dance and sing to their music. Savannah said that they’re “best friends but sisters at heart.” The girls seem to have a great bond and it truly shows while they’re on stage because they work together to captivate the audience!
All of the artists stuck around to take pictures with campers and staff and even danced the night away with them! The event was a success thanks to these amazing artists! Check out our Flickr for more pictures of the first annual ASCCApalooza!
