Friends of ASCCA: This is Home

Hi there! I’m Jamaica! You might remember me from a blog that I wrote back in February, but it’s been a while so here’s the link: https://www.campascca.org/blog/friends-of-ascca-get-to-know-jamaica/.

Today, I am going to touch on my experience at ASCCA and what ASCCA means to me. I must say though that in all of my years of writing thus far, this is the hardest, yet easiest piece I’ve written. You’ve probably heard this saying numerous times by now, but it just sums up camp so well. “This is Home.” Now that you know that Camp ASCCA is home for me, I’ll tell you my favorite things about my home. My absolute favorite thing about my home is that it is accessible to everyone and I can have friends over from all walks of life. In my home, there is something for everyone to enjoy and have fun doing.

Rotary Youth Leadership Awards 2018

Each year, high school students from around South Alabama visit Camp ASCCA in the spring for the annual Rotary Youth Leadership Awards. More than 50 rotary clubs sponsor students from their areas to represent their communities and grow in their leadership abilities as they near high school graduation. Last Thursday afternoon, the students and their leaders arrived for three days of team-building activities, special speakers, and more.

Tallassee Day Camp 2018

A caravan of buses and cars arrived on Thursday for this year’s day camp with Tallassee Schools. Students from the elementary, middle and high schools traveled with teachers and parents for a day of fun outside of the classroom. Everyone had the opportunity to enjoy a ride on the zip-line, fishing at the pond, and boatrides on Lake Martin. Several students attend Camp ASCCA during the summer too and could not help but share their excitement for what is to come in Summer 2018.

St. James Science Camp 2018

Last week, fifth grade students from St. James School visited Camp ASCCA for a three-day science camp. The schedule of programs was designed by Outdoor Education Director Cody Graham, and the students were divided into groups of ten to rotate from program to program. The goal of the week was for students to have unending fun while also brushing up on their knowledge of science.

Friends of ASCCA: Life as ComedianBP!

Hello my name is Brandon Pinkney. You probably remember me from my last ASCCA blog, but if not, here’s a link: https://www.campascca.org/guest-blog/friends-of-ascca-get-to-know-brandon/.

On this blog we’re not going to talk about my disability. Enough with the “Awww that’s amazing that made me almost shed a tear.” In this blog, we’re turning it up a notch to “Holy smokes! That’s amazing we need more people like you,” so I take that back today I’m not Brandon Pinkney. Today you guys get to me ComedianBP!

Alabama District of Pilot International TBI Camp 2018

Over the weekend, the Alabama District Pilot International hosted their annual TBI Camp, and this year’s theme was “Fiesta.” The event is held every year in hopes of offering exciting and new opportunities for individuals who are living with a traumatic brain injury. Campers, their families, and volunteers spent time doing a variety of activities across the ASCCA campus.

Friends of ASCCA: Get to know Hank!

I have been to a lot of camps, but there’s no place like Camp ASCCA. Camp ASCCA is a special place, and the friendships are valuable. I went for 8 years, and those 8 years were filled with the best nights, mornings, days that I have ever experienced. The first year I got homesick, but the staff was capable of making me feel like I was at “home.” Amber Cotney who is the Program Director was the one that held me by the pool for the first year when I cried because I was homesick.

Alabama Civitans volunteer during Fun Fish 2018

Every year, Civitans from across the Alabama Central District pay a visit to Camp ASCCA during the annual Fun Fish weekend to help out across the campus. On Saturday, March 24, several members arrived to work under the direction of Camp Director Matt Rickman who had planned several projects for them to do to help update the campus.

ASCCA Fun Fish 2018

Campers and volunteers arrived on Friday afternoon for what would be an unforgettable weekend full of big catches, gusty winds, and endless entertainment. Each year, we host a weekend of fishing for our campers to attend, and they are able to fish from the ASCCA pond, the ASCCA boat dock, and they even get to make a trip or two out on a fishing boat with our volunteer boaters.

Cahaba Valley Elks Lodge donates 20-tier shelving rack to Camp ASCCA

On Tuesday, members from the Cahaba Valley Elks Lodge traveled to Camp to make a donation to the camp kitchen. The item donated was a 20-tier shelving rack, and they even took the time to assemble it and mark it with a special plaque. The need for a shelving rack was discovered when Elks member Barbara Shinpaugh volunteered during camp one day last summer.
