This year, we have added almost thirty camp counselors to our summer staff. Most of our counselors come from all over the United States, but we have some who took quite the trip to be apart of Camp ASCCA this summer! Dylan (Dilly Bob) Sherman is one of our counselors for summer 2023, and he came all the way from South Africa to experience Camp ASCCA.
Dilly Bob spent his entire life in South Africa before visiting The United States for the first time this year. Dilly Bob is part of a program called Camp America in which people from all over the world get matched with a summer camp in The United States. Dilly Bob first heard about Camp America when he was in high school.
“I had a friend in high school who did Camp America, and as soon as I heard about his experience with Camp America, I immediately set up my profile,” Dilly Bob said.
After filling out his profile, he was able to browse through several camps and came across Camp ASCCA. Camp ASCCA specifically caught Dilly Bob’s eye because he has always felt the need to serve people, and he has family members who have disabilities.
“My life goal has always been to be of service to those who need any assistance,” Dilly Bob says, “as soon as I saw Camp ASCCA’s introduction video and learned about their mission, I knew that was the place I wanted to be.”
When he got an interview from Camp Director Matt Rickman, he was over the moon. He wanted to be apart of Camp ASCCA’s cause, and definitely wanted to spend the summer in The United States! Dilly Bob has always felt an inclination towards the United States, specifically southern culture.
When asked why he loves America and southern culture so much Dilly Bob said, “growing up, I always watched American movies and felt drawn to films that portrayed southern culture and hospitality. Forrest Gump was always was one of my favorite movies, so being in Alabama has been a very interesting experience for me.”
Dilly Bob has been a wonderful addition to the summer staff here at Camp ASCCA. He is so helpful to all of his campers, and helps everyone around him with anything they need. We are so grateful that Dilly Bob has come to America (and would like to stay a lot longer)!
Our campers have a natural connection to Dilly Bob, and they appreciate him for all that he does. To see more pictures of Dilly Bob and the rest of our amazing summer staff, click here.
