Earlier this month, the newest addition to the full-time staff, Adventure Program Specialist Jacob Boyer, paid a visit to his alma mater, Mississippi State University to speak with a few groups about Camp ASCCA. As many of you may know, the fraternity Pi Kappa Phi and its members from across the country are often heavily involved with the many projects we have going on here at Camp. As Camp Director Matt Rickman once said, “You can spin in a circle with your eyes closed, point in any direction, and odds are you’re pointing at something the Pi Kapps had their hands on.”
Jacob just so happens to be a founding alumnus of the Pi Kappa Phi Iota Nu chapter at Mississippi State, so while in town, he held a recruitment meeting with the guys and discussed how they could get involved with Camp ASCCA. After his meeting with the fraternity, he met with student staff members of the school’s ACCESS program that serves students with intellectual and developmental disabilities. After speaking with a few professors from the special education program, Jacob left with a few scheduled video conferences with hopes of recruiting future summer staff members for Camp ASCCA.
However, the Pi Kappa Phi visits did not end there. A few days later, Jacob and Cody made the trip down Highway 280 to Auburn to speak with the members of its Pi Kappa Phi fraternity. The guys from the Auburn chapter often work during Fun Fish Weekend and Halloween Weekend each year, so it was a great opportunity to connect with the returning volunteers and answer any questions the newer members might have had. We are very thankful for all the volunteer work the Pi Kappa Phi fraternity does for Camp ASCCA each year, and we cannot wait to see everyone at Fun Fish 2019 in just a few weeks.
We are always looking for new places and people to share Camp ASCCA with, so if you or your organization would like to hear from a member of our staff, contact Camp Director Matt Rickman at matt@campascca.org or Program Director Amber Cotney at amber@campascca.org!
