We were recently informed that Camp ASCCA will be receiving a $4,000 United States Tennis Association (USTA) Public Facility Grant. Camp ASCCA applied for the grant to repair and resurface its two existingtennis courts. Work included patch work, surface sanding, the application of a new resurfacerand new color to repair damaged areas and cracks caused by tree roots and drainage issues.
Camp ASCCA currently serves over 7,100 children and adults annually. Individuals use our facilities throughout the year and those attending our camp have access to the tennis courts and needed equipment.
Throughout the course of an individual’s stay during camp, a scheduled period of time is usually spent at the tennis courts where individuals will be exposed to the basics of the game. Camp ASCCA’s primary goal is to expand the level of awareness and exposure to the game for the disabled population that we serve.
One of the most exciting changes to the courts include new white tennis playing lines for two 78’ courts that include new Quick Start playing lines. More about Quick Start can be viewed at a related website here.
The Quick Start playing lines allow for two 60’ courts and four 36’ courts according to the USTA Quick Start guidelines. Privacy screens and a variety of standard tournament and Quick Start nets are also being purchased. These additional lines and nets are great for standard play, Quick Start play and accessible play.
According to the award letter sent from Virgil Christian, Director of Community Tennis Development for the USTA, “a goal of the grant is to provide communities access to safe, appealing and functional tennis environments and we are happy to partner with Camp ASCCA to help achieve this goal in Jackson’s Gap, Alabama.” He went on to write “the essence of this initiative is to assist communities leverage their tennis facilities to promote lifelong healthy activity and improve their programming by advancing the latest tennis innovations for all program types.”

We would like to extend a special thanks to former Camp ASCCA Board Chair, Dr. Glenn Roswal for his leadership and advice for the project and to Lower Bros. Co. Inc., the company that completed the work.
