“We don’t get to do things like this very often,” was a statement I heard from parents throughout the weekend as families visited with the Autism Society of Alabama for this year’s Camp Frog. Each year, families from around the state travel to Camp ASCCA to spend a weekend that is designed specifically for their children.
As families arrived the fun began, and I couldn’t think of a better way to kick off the weekend than a Friday night scavenger hunt followed by a campfire. After the campfire, everyone was sure to get a good night’s rest as Saturday was scheduled to be a busy day.
With Saturday came a morning of rain that kept everyone cool for most of the day as the campers and their families enjoyed time in the pool, flying down the zip line, and more. College football was also a part of the day as the state’s major universities, the University of Alabama and Auburn University, were setup for Southeastern Conference games throughout the afternoon. Between activities, the games often brought families together to cheer for their respective teams.
Following the Bama game, the ASCCA staff prepped the Lions Lodge for a talent show that will certainly be remembered for its spirit and spunk. This particular talent show required very little music because several campers came ready with their own specialty talents like a magic show, Family Feud, playing the piano, and sport stacking. The vocal performances consisted of songs by Katy Perry, Men at Work, and more. After visits from Camp Frog’s very own Jackie the Frog, campers were ready for one more campfire that this time consisted of everyone’s favorite treat, S’mores.
On Sunday morning, families were able to enjoy a camp breakfast and a few more free choice activities before heading home. At the end of the weekend, one parent shared her thoughts on our Facebook page, “This camp has the best program staff and welcoming hearts as any mom desires for your child. It’s a very special place.”
We had the best time with the Autism Society of Alabama, and we could not have asked for a better way to spend the last official weekend of summer!
We look forward to next time!
