What was expected to be a presentation to the Montgomery Academy’s Philanthropy 101 class turned into a much bigger surprise for Camp Director Matt Rickman and the ASCCA staff. Each year, classes from around the area often visit Camp ASCCA to tour the campus and learn more about how a true nonprofit organization operates.
This year was expected to be the same. However, the Central Alabama Community Foundation and the students from Montgomery Academy had a better idea for this year’s meeting.
As Camp Director Matt Rickman began to speak with the students from Montgomery Academy in the dining hall, CACF President Burton Upchurch Ward secretly stepped off the Montgomery Academy bus with balloons and a big check in hand. She politely interrupted the conversation with a “SURPRISE!” and received a shocked and confused look in return from Matt. Today’s grant was completely unexpected, so it was definitely a great surprise and will be a wonderful resource for this summer!

Camp ASCCA is the tenth recipient of a CACF surprise grant, and they will soon be visiting 20 more nonprofit organizations as a part of their 30th anniversary celebration. After the big surprise, the students from Montgomery Academy and the representatives from Central Alabama Community Foundation were given a tour by our elated camp director and also took a look at a few of our programs in action!
