Camp ASCCA hosts several camps, known as user groups, throughout the year. The other camps use ASCCA grounds to provide a facility for their organization and catered to their own needs. Sometimes staff and campers become more interested in the actual Camp ASCCA summer program which leads them to hopping on for a full summer of fun with the Camp ASCCA sessions.
Last week, ASCCA was joined by four members of the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA). Joseph and his son, Mason, have been loyal counselors for MDA for several years. They attend each teen week at ASCCA to be with their all time favorite campers. Campers, Brantley and Logan, are a part of MDA both at Camp and in their everyday lives; our PR staff member, Madi, is also a member. The Muscular Dystrophy Association provides extensive research, latest treatments, and recreational therapy opportunities to all patients. MDA is an organization that serves those living with neuromuscular diseases such as Muscular Dystrophy, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, and diseases that take away from overall strength and mobility. Now, many MDA campers and counselors sign up to be a part of our Camp ASCCA team. MDA used the ASCCA campus for several years to provide accessible summer camp experiences. Camp ASCCA is proud to serve the campers and staff of the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
This summer, Camp has had the amazing pleasure of welcoming some staff that are very familiar with the ASCCA campus. This group of individuals have been long term members of Camp Seale Harris (CSH). Much like MDA, Seale Harris has used Camp ASCCA grounds as a means to serve their own attendees. Seale Harris is an organization whose goal is to educate and empower those living with Type 1 Diabetes. Camp Seale Harris provides a community for children and families living with diabetes. Five of our seven staff members from Seale Harris are diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. However, each one has served as camper, counselor, and some even as unit leaders. Our program staff member, Kathryn, has attended Camp Seale Harris since she was born (22 years), through her mother’s close ties to the camp. Counselor Chris, also attended for several years and has been a camper, counselor in training, counselor, and unit leader for CSH. Caroline, Gracie, Jon, Kate, and Tessa, have all served as both campers and counselors for CSH! Camp ASCCA is fortunate to be able to gain such valued members of the Seale Harris community. The collaboration between CSH and ASCCA is a prize to be treasured in the summer camp family!
