Counselor Danny Coker, 1953-2015

Sadly, we’ve learned that one of our summer staff members, Danny Coker, passed away this past Sunday.

Danny was one of the original staff members back in 1976! What an honor it was for us to have him here then and for two years after. Danny had stayed in touch with many of the counselors he met back then and checked in with the staff now and again throughout the years.

Jan 13, 1953 – March 8, 2015 Danny W. Coker, age 62, of McCalla, devoted husband, father and soon to be “Dan-Daddy” went to be with his Lord and Savior on Sunday, March 8, 2015. He was a native of Shawmut, Alabama. Danny was a graduate of Auburn University and the University of North Texas where he studied art and photography. He worked for the Department of Veteran Affairs as a graphics specialist for over 20 years. Danny was a long time member of Hunter Street Baptist Church where he served as a pre-school Sunday school teacher. He was an avid hunter and supporter of disabled outdoorsmen and disabled veterans. Danny was an accomplished artist and photographer. He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Sandee Owen Coker; daughters Capt Jenny Coker Campbell, USAF (Capt Robert Campbell, USAF), and Sarah Maria Coker; son, Jesse Daniel Coker; parents, Wilford Ernest Coker and Mildred Hamlet Coker; three sisters, Phyllis Coker Boone (Tom), Beverly Coker Teague (Tim) and Barbara Hamlet McDow (Larry) and numerous nieces, nephews and friends. A celebration of Danny’s life will be held on Wednesday, March 11, 2015 at 11:00 AM at Hunter Street Baptist Church. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, March 10, 2015 at Hunter Street Baptist Church from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. Memorials may be made to the Wounded Warrior Foundation or to Hunter Street Baptist Church.
