“Nurse Debra” was married to Joe Spavone, one of our former Health Services Directors. Sadly, she passed away this past spring. ASCCA’s mission impressed Debra greatly and she had a vision for her own legacy here at Camp.
Since her background and primary interest is infection control, she has always wanted hand hygiene sinks at Camp’s dining hall! Debra told us long before the pandemic how important frequent hand washing was. Debra was also interested in assisting campers from Georgia with camperships.
In her memory, the Spavone’s have recently donated $7,000 to provide the handwashing station and funds to our endowment fund. Interest from the endowment donation will be provided to a camper each summer, in Debra’s memory, as a campership.
According to her husband Joe, “Debra was amazing! As I sorted out her things, I found multiple awards and recognition, some of it national. She worked at the CDC during the H5N1 pandemic, as well as other avian flu. She made sure her hospitals had enough PPE way back in 2015. She really helped get Camp ASCCA nursing on a modern footing and she got us to take infection control seriously before it was cool. She dealt with millions of dollars and the board room every day, but always had time to come to Camp and help with check-in and to pass out medicine. Google “Debra Spavone Piedmont” on YouTube and you will find a short video and hand hygiene for visitors. I like this video because it was made in her prime, before her final decline. She is still serving, even after death.”
