Operations at Easter Seals Camp ASCCA’s Dadeville Campus (formerly Camp Civitan) have been suspended until further notice, according to Camp ASCCA’s administrator John Stephenson. The Dadeville Campus suffered a direct hit from the tornado that raged through Tallapoosa County on Wednesday, April 27, 2011. Camp ASCCA’s main campus, located in Jackson’s Gap, was NOT affected.
The Dadeville Campus, located off of County Road 34 near the Holiday Shores area, received damage to buildings, program areas, and land is extensive. Both houses at the site were affected; one totally destroyed and the other damaged by fallen and broken trees. Several large shed structures and a maintenance building are destroyed. Remaining buildings all suffered damage and include the central activity center/gym and three cabins. There is minor to extensive damage to all of the boating and fishing piers. All program areas are affected or devastated including the putt-putt area, amphitheatre, canoeing, paddle boats, riflery, water balloon fort, and of course, hiking trails.
Additionally, Stephenson asks that people “realize that all buildings at the Dadeville Campus are not safe for use and it’s potentially very dangerous to begin clean up with volunteer help at this time”. He adds that “it’s hard to describe the damage and the amount of effort and work it will take to restore the area”.
Stephenson wants to stress that “most importantly our staff member Tom Collier, who lives at the Dadeville Campus, survived the tornado”. He continues by putting Camp ASCCA’s loss into perspective by saying “our loss of property is minor in comparison to those who have lost friends, family members, and homes in this devastating storm. Our prayers and condolences go out to them”.
The Board of Directors and staff of Camp ASCCA wants to thank everyone for their kind words, phone calls, notes and emails of concern, and especially to the many people who have offered their time and help.
