On Tuesday, April 11th, fifth grade students from St. James School traveled to Camp ASCCA for the school’s annual three-day Environmental Science Camp. After a quick lunch Tuesday afternoon, students were split into five groups that would rotate through the week’s programs. The activity schedule consisted of group elements, zip tower, canoeing, Nature Jeopardy, forestry, Living Streams, and Step Out & Fish.
After each day’s morning and afternoon rotations, the students and their parents participated in evening programs. Tuesday night was spent in the gym playing games, and Wednesday evening was spent around the campfire making s’mores. The s’mores were a hot topic of the day on Wednesday as everyone was looking for a sweet treat to enjoy after a hot day at camp.
At each activity, the students were expected to learn something new. Many of the programs offered valuable outdoor lessons like, the proper way to set up your hook and bait when fishing, new knowledge about Alabama nature, the “critters” that can be found in an Alabama stream, and much more. In other activities like zip tower and group elements, the students had to learn how to work together as a team and conquer adversity.
Throughout the week, we were joined by volunteers from organizations like the Tallapoosa County Conservation District and the Alabama Department of Conservation & Natural Resources. Mandi Milford from the Tallapoosa County Conservation District and Doug Darr from the Alabama Department of Conservation & Natural Resources helped with programs specific to their organizations like Living Streams and Step Out & Fish.
By Thursday afternoon, students, parents, and teachers were exhausted and ready to head home after the final rotation of programs. Coming in, the students were obviously familiar with their classmates but left camp with stronger friendships and a sense of better teamwork.
