Friends of ASCCA: Chad Shares About His Week at Camp ASCCA

Hey counselors and friends! As you may know, this month is Disability Pride Month. The Americans with Disabilities Act is an important law that helps give us access to things we need in our community, like schools, stores, buses, government buildings, and even captions on TV. It was passed on July 26, 1990.

At Camp ASCCA, everyone has a disability. The time I spend with friends at Camp ASCCA is always the best, in my opinion, it’s the best special needs camp in Alabama. Noise-canceling headphones were provided for those in loud places like the dining hall, BcK4t, and OutPost. When we watch movies at the BcK4T always have the closed captioning on.

All the counselors and campers I met were very cool and awesome! They listened and talked about all my favorite things with me. I enjoyed getting to know the new staff members, spending time with all my old friends, and making new ones. We had a pizza class with employees from Little Italy Pizzeria. Our talent show this year lasted about 2.5 hours. Our concert that week was with Taylor Hunnicutt. She put on a great show and the concert lasted about an hour and a half. I was lucky this year to be able to complete all the programs without having a thunderstorm.

Nature is now at the old Administration Building, the Tom Collier Nature and Welcome Center. When you first enter the building, you are greeted by Terry, our bearded dragon, in the lobby. The nature aspect is now on the left side of the building, and the lab is straight to the back. They’ve also added a sensory area on the right of the building.
