I have so many memories from my time at Camp ASCCA!
During my very first summer at Camp ASCCA, I had the chance to go down the waterslide. That was the first time in my life I had ever been able to do something like that. For instance, at water parks, if a wheelchair user is there, they typically have to climb stairs or a ladder to get to the top. But at Camp, the slide is built on the side of a hill. I’m able to go up the hill in my wheelchair, be transferred into the inner tube, and then go down the slide.
Another one of my favorite memories was being able to jump on the trampoline. The adventure staff fastened me into the harness, and then I was able to jump high, like I was the Amazing Spider-Man. It was the first time in my life I had been able to do something like that. Matt Rickman said that I was the first camper with cerebral palsy at Camp ASCCA to try the trampoline.
During one of the summer sessions I attended, we had a concert, and the singer performed “Purple Rain” as a tribute to pop star Prince. All of the campers in wheelchairs were spinning around and dancing, and the lights on the Big Stage were changing colors to the beat of the music.
I strongly believe that Camp ASCCA is a magical place for everyone involved in the organization. I am extremely grateful to Camp ASCCA for allowing me to be a guest blogger and for the opportunity to share my Camp experience.
