Friends of ASCCA: Windsor’s Fall Camp Highlights

Is a three-day fall camp worth it? Yes, it is! I just got back from Camp ASCCA the other day, and I had a lot of fun. It was well worth our two-hour drive. I met someone who drives seven hours to get to Camp ASCCA, and at the end of the camp, she agreed. The three-day weekend camp is packed with activities, from arriving Friday afternoon to leaving Sunday morning.

My parents and I arrived at Camp ASCCA on Friday afternoon at 4:00, the start of the check-in time. Check-in was quick and efficient, so I was with my counselor in my cabin within a few minutes. I was assigned to Chickasaw cabin, which I have stayed in only once a few years ago.

After settling in and meeting my bunkmates, we headed to the dining hall for supper. Pizza is always the first meal of camp, whether a weekend or summer session. Since I love pizza, it’s a great way to kick off the weekend.

Another good way to kick off the festivities is with a talent show, which is really popular at Camp ASCCA. Unlike the others who chose various country and pop songs, I sang “This Is Halloween” from Nightmare Before Christmas. After everyone who wanted to had a chance to perform, we headed back to our cabins for a good night’s sleep.

Saturday morning started early with French toast sticks for breakfast—another favorite of mine! After breakfast, my group went to archery. We got five shots each, compared to only three during the summer session. I almost got a bullseye!

After archery, we headed over to arts and crafts, which is my favorite activity. In honor of the fall theme, we made pumpkin cut-outs. I finished early, so with my time left over, I did brain-teaser activities, such as mazes and word searches. Then we went to the Zipline, which takes you on a beautiful flight beside the lake.

Lunch was burgers with Halloween music playing in the background. After rest period and snack time, our group participated in a trick-or-treat scavenger hunt. Clues led us to different locations around camp where we could find candy. We walked all over camp! I was exhausted as we walked back to our cabins to change for the costume party.

I dressed up as Flo from Progressive. Everybody was laughing and understood the joke. Nothing is scarier than an insurance agent! I did not win the costume contest though; the clear winner was a camper dressed as Beetlejuice. His costume was spot on to the character. Nevertheless, I enjoyed the dancing, music, and arcade games until it was time to head back to our cabins for bed.

For our last day on Sunday morning, we had several choices, and we could pick two. I was lucky enough to have time to do three activities. The first was karaoke. I sang the intro to the movie Little Shop of Horrors. The second was bungee jumping, which is actually a bungee trampoline. Two people stand beside you; one controls your jump, and the other keeps a hand on your waist to prevent you from falling over. This was my first time bungee jumping, and I liked it.

The third activity was to visit the Camp ASCCA shop. I did not bring money with me, but I asked them to set aside a shirt I liked. Once my parents arrived, we went to the shop and bought it.

Before my parents arrived, my group went back to the cabin to make sure everything was packed. As we waited for families to arrive, everyone in the girls’ cabins sat in the courtyard and listened to music and talked for the last time. My parents arrived at the pickup time of 11:00, and checkout was quick.

As usual, I spent the whole drive back home talking about the details from camp. The weather had been perfect, although a little windy for my taste, with clear skies every day. Everyone was friendly, and we had so much fun. If you are unsure whether or not for your kids to go to fall camp next year or to any weekend camp, trust me, it is worth it.
