Camp ASCCA held its annual Fun Fish Weekend March 22-24, 2013. Yes, it was a rainy weekend, but our fishermen and women were lucky – we didn’t have to cancel any fishing session because it only rained during the non-fishing times!
The 28 campers participating had a great time. We had 24 volunteers which included 19 members from Pi Kappa Phi fraternity, Auburn University. Generously, nine boater volunteers participated, most who are local citizens and have been participating for a number of years. However, there were a few “first-timers”. Stuart Brown from Phenix City has been a long-time summer employee at Camp ASCCA, but this was his first time as a boater/guide for Fun Fish! Wayne Hubbard and James Duncan from the Alexander City Fire Department were also “first-timers”.
According to Amber Cotney, who co-coordinated the weekend, “It was exciting to see the Bass boats come in because they were catching lots of fish – sometimes 20 or more!”
The other Camp ASCCA employee co-coordinating the weekend, Lyle Coutts, added that Sgt. Michael East with the Division of Wildlife & Freshwater Fisheries came out to assist. Lyle said that “Sgt. East helped get the boats out into the water the first day and then all the campers got to show him their fishing licenses and it was a lot of fun for them.”
WestPoint Coca-Cola additionally donated water and PowerAde to cool off the participants during the weekend. Camp ASCCA has had a long relationship with this generous Coca-Cola distributorship.
Awards for fishing were given out on Sunday. Bobby Joe was the “Big Fish” winner with his 12 pound striped bass he caught out of Stuart Brown’s boat. Jeannie won “Most Fish by a Female” and Doug won “Most Fish by a Male.”
The types of fish caught over the weekend included crappie, striped bass, and catfish. Everyone is already looking forward to next year!
