One United Way agency is continuing its mission of providing a summer camp experience for those with disabilities.

Camp ASCCA (Alabama Special Care for Children and Adults) is a part of the Easter Seals of Alabama and a United Way Agency that serves those with disabilities.

“We’re open year round and we provide recreation and education services like any other camp, but we just make it adaptable for children and adults with disabilities,” said Dana Rickman, director of marketing and communications for Camp ASCCA. “The people with disabilities we serve include physical and intellectual disabilities.”

Rickman said Camp ASCCA’s summer activities include water programs such as tubing and canoeing on the lake, swimming, paddle boarding and fishing. The camp also has an environmental center, nature programs, horseback riding, arts and crafts – among others.

“Our summer program has weeklong sessions, divided up by disabilities and age groups,” Rickman said. “We have a lot of programs – we just make it all accessible.” Camp ASCCA serves people ages six to adults, and Rickman said the United Way plays a big part in helping children and adults attend the camps.

“We are self-funded and rely on a lot of donations. We rely on donations from individuals, organizations and businesses. United Way is a large part of that,” Rickman said. “The money we receive through United Way from the community helps support our campership program, which is when children and adults with disabilities that we serve need assistance paying the summer camp fee. That’s where United Way comes in.”

Rickman added that it’s the contributions of individuals to United Way that really help out. “It’s because of organizations like the United Way that we’re able to provide the services and camperships to people with disabilities in our area,” Rickman said. “Individuals are a large part of that annual giving and that comes together with the United Way to really help out.”
