It is a Camp ASCCA tradition that the head counselors design a paddle that goes with the week’s theme and choose a cabin to give it to. This cabin is known as the honor cabin for the week! It is an extreme honor to be named cabin of the week because that means that your cabin stood out from the rest of the great cabins in a positive way.
This year, head counselors Jay and Sarah, have been observing counselors and program staff on their cabin spirit and cabin cleanliness. I was able to speak with both head counselors as they designed this week’s paddle in a Monster’s Ball theme. They said that the thing that gets the most points is cabin spirit! It’s important to be as energetic as possible all week long to give campers excited for all of the activities. They enjoy seeing cabins cheering their chants throughout the day. If counselors in a cabin are all adding a specific matching accessory or face paint, each camper should be included. Counselors should be working as a team and not letting one person take on something difficult alone. They said that it is always a plus when a whole cabin decides to participate in the talent show together! Cabin spirit earns points but also makes the smiles on campers’ faces bigger!
Cabins are also judged based on cabin cleanliness. Every morning after breakfast, Jay and Sarah head to the cabins and check how the living areas are. Beds need to be made, no trash in sight, and all luggage put away neatly. This encourages program staff, counselors, and campers to keep a clean living environment to maintain smooth mobility throughout the cabin and keep insects out.
Jay and Sarah both said that choosing honor cabin is something they look forward to every week. So far, our honor cabins this year have been Moundville, Cheaha, and Crow.
They are still observing everyone so that they can choose this week’s winner! They said that this is one of the highlights of their jobs! They’d like to thank all program staff and counselors for all of their hard work this summer and for the effort they know that everyone will put into the remaining sessions!
