This week we are joined by the Hope Heals Camp, formerly known as Rooftop Friends Alabama Family Retreat. According to hopehealscamp.org, the mission of the camp is to create “a week-long experience in Alabama for individuals and families with disabilities that marks the beginning of a lasting community grown from the disabilities in us all.”
The camp received its name change after Katherine and Jay Wolf visited the Rooftop Friends Retreat to share their story of overcoming unexpected obstacles and living with hope. The couple was inspired by the people at the camp and felt as though “these were our people.” They soon combined forces with Rooftop Friends and renamed the week to Hope Heals Camp.
At the beginning of the week, campers and their families are partnered with volunteers known as Compassionate Companions (“CCs”) who are trained to serve and encourage the campers during the entire week of camp. Throughout the week, campers and their “CCs” will have the opportunity to experience many of the programs that are offered here at ASCCA along with a few more that are provided by outside organizations. The hope of this week is that campers are given the opportunity to experience new things and participate in activities that they may not have the opportunity to do anywhere else.
Today, the activities officially started with program rotations through crafts, a Bible study, music, and archery lessons with Buckmasters. All of the morning programs were developed and planned by the Hope Heals team, and this afternoon campers will meet up with the ASCCA program staff for rotations at tubing, water slide, horseback, and zip line.
