As soon as Mercy Wilborn skidded to a stop at the bottom of the steep waterslide at Alabama’s Special Camp for Children and Adults, she began begging for another turn.
“You saw me going down?” she asked on a sweltering hot day in July. “Ahhh, I was screaming really loud. I want to go again.”
Mercy’s enthusiasm was shared by the other campers at Camp ASCCA, which provides camping experiences for people with physical and mental disabilities. Throughout the year, Camp ASCCA serves about 7,000 people in weekend and week-long sessions on its 230-acre campus on the northern end of Lake Martin, according to the camp’s website.
The slide is the newest addition to the camp’s recreational activities, which include tubing, a ropes course, horseback riding, archery and canoeing – all adapted for people with disabilities…. more
