How Alabama Baptist Disaster Relief Saved Our Summer

Last Sunday, June 29, Camp ASCCA experienced a severe storm that led to a lightning strike hitting a tree. The strike traveled and caused our kitchen in the Dining Hall to catch fire. In just moments, a space that has served as the heart of Camp for decades was suddenly and unexpectedly damaged.

The love, support, and generosity we’ve received since then has been nothing short of overwhelming. One of the very first calls we received was from the Alabama Baptist Disaster Relief team. Without hesitation, they offered their services to us completely free of charge. Within days, they had transformed the parking lot outside the Dining Hall into a fully functioning outdoor kitchen and began preparing meals for our campers and staff.

Thanks to their selfless support, we were able to reopen camp on Sunday, July 6, and continue with our summer sessions. Grateful doesn’t begin to describe how we feel.

The Alabama Baptist Disaster Relief works hand in hand with other state conventions to support those affected by disaster. They provide food, water, showers, laundry services, repairs, and rebuilding efforts—always at no cost—because of the generous giving of Alabama Baptists through the Cooperative Program. Their mission is grounded in compassion, and that compassion has touched us deeply.

At Camp ASCCA, we’ve always known we’re surrounded by an amazing community, but this past week has reminded us just how strong and faithful that support truly is. When we needed help, you didn’t hesitate. You stepped in with open hearts and helping hands.

Words will never be enough to express what your generosity has meant to us. Every prayer, message, call, and donation has carried us through a time we never expected. This summer may not look like what we had envisioned, but thanks to you, we’re still here—still creating memories, still making magic.

From the bottom of our hearts, thank you.
