Kaleidoscope at Camp ASCCA!

Today I had the opportunity to sit down and speak with Donnell Flowers and Caitlin Borri of Kaleidoscope, a Goodwill Easter Seals Program in Mobile, Alabama. Donnell and Caitlin came to Camp ASCCA with 15 Kaleidoscope participants as part of Mobile Rotary this week and were nice enough to tell me a little bit about what they do at Kaleidoscope.

Kaleidoscope is a recreational leisure program that provides day services to 25 young adults with developmental disabilities and/or other disabilities in the Mobile area. Some of the exciting activities they offer include games, arts and crafts, cooking, and some really great field trips! Participants have journeyed to the bowling alley, swimming pools, Mississippi to milk cows, and even Pensacola, Florida to see the Blue Angels! Their services run Monday-Friday from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM, with optional earlier hours for working parents.

Donnell and Caitlin act as the two primary full time staff at Kaleidoscope. Donnell was part of the original team that helped develop Kaleidoscope at it’s conception 2 years ago, while Caitlin is the standing Activities Coordinator. They accept volunteers year-round to help with activities.

Donnell and Caitlin mentioned that the Kaleidoscope group talk about Camp ASCCA often and excitedly in the weeks leading up to camp and how great it has been to experience it with them! They agreed, however, that there have been marked differences in some of their first time campers after this awesome week. One camper they described is at times not as involved in regular programs… but this was quickly remedied by a Camp ASCCA talent show, where she could be seen showing off her moves on stage!! Camp ASCCA truly brings out the very best in everyone. Some special moments for Caitlin and Donnell have been witnessing staff comaraderie, getting to know campers, and seeing how amazingly accessible and inclusive Camp ASCCA is.

Thank you Donnell and Caitlin for your amazing service and for experiencing camp with us for the first of many times!
