The atmosphere of the great outdoors and joy of summer camp are small parts of the traditional experience Easter Seals Camp ASCCA aims to provide to children and adults, regardless of their disabilities.

Easter Seals Camp ASCCA (Alabama’s Special Camp for Children and Adults) is a summer camp located on 240 acres on the north end of Lake Martin in Jacksons Gap that has served Alabama and the southeast for nearly 40 years.

“We’ve been here since 1976, and our mission is to provide outdoor recreation and camping opportunities to children and adults with mental and physical disabilities,” said camp administrator John Stephenson. “We’re designed basically to be a traditional summer camp that people without disabilities would attend, so we have all those types of activities and offer them to people with disabilities.”

Activities and facilities offered at Camp ASCCA include fishing, canoeing, paddleboards, water slides, climbing towers, zip lines, a miniature golf course, a swimming pool, a gymnasium for basketball, and hunting properties as well.

Stephenson said Camp ASCCA serves about 5,500 to 6,500 visitors each year, primarily during the summer months of June, July and August, but also has programs for select weekends throughout the year.

“We’re pretty much the only option in the state the way we do it. What we mean by that is that this is an all-inclusive package for the campers that come here,” Stephenson said. “We provide their counselor, the programming, the nursing and medical staff, food service, and all of the support services they would need. A lot of camps now require you to bring your own care provider, but we provide that.”

Stephenson said Camp ASCCA is thankful for the support it receives from the Lake Martin Area United Way and the community.

“They’re (United Way) a big help, of course, with fundraising locally. That’s what we count on them to do – to provide that little additional financial boost through their fundraising efforts throughout the year,” Stephenson said. “We’re very fortunate to be in a community that supports us and thankful for the Lake Martin community in supporting what we do. We’re very grateful and appreciative of that support.”
