Lee-Scott Academy Environmental Science Camp 2018

This week, we were joined by sixth grade students from Lee Scott Academy in Auburn for the second science camp of the spring. Several weeks ago, we were visited by a group from St. James School in Montgomery for a similar session. This year’s camp with LSA was a blast and included an educational and fun-packed schedule. The students were split into four groups that they would stick with throughout each program rotation.

The excitement began Wednesday afternoon as the students, teachers and parents were offered activities at canoeing, the cargo net, the Dunn Center for Nature Jeopardy and group elements in the gym. Throughout the day, the students were challenged on their science-based knowledge and their abilities to work together as a team. After a couple program rotations, everyone gathered together for dinner followed by a scavenger hunt and gym games. Outdoor Education Specialist Cody Graham provided a list of objects for the students to find across the ASCCA campus, and later, they all gathered in the gym for a variety of teambuilding games.

Thursdays activities included a whole new schedule of programs that pushed the students to new heights. Groups rotated between the Step Out and Fish program at the fishing pond, Living Streams, disc golf and zip-lining. The students had great luck catching largemouth bass and bream at the pond, and several also caught crawfish and other “critters” that are living in our streams. Disc golf was a new program for the LSA Science Camp, and the students loved every second of it. One of the greatest moments of the day consisted of students cheering and pushing their classmates to conquer fears with a ride down the zip-line. To cap off an incredible Thursday, the students enjoyed an evening session at the waterslide, and it was an exciting time full of fun music, oversized board games and plenty of spectacular slides.

Before they could leave on Friday, the students had a couple more program rotations to complete. They were assigned the two programs that they did not participate in on Wednesday. Some enjoyed the challenge of the cargo net, while others were put to the test on their Alabama wildlife, weather and space knowledge at Nature Jeopardy. Some students even went home a little damp after splashing each other all morning at canoeing. Everyone enjoyed one last lunch together, and then the buses were packed up to make the easy trek back to Auburn.

We had a great time with everyone from Lee Scott Academy and look forward to working together again next year! You can check out more moments from the week here.
