Looking Back on a Summer of Farm Fun

We know summer is officially over when the day arrives to say goodbye to our beloved farm animals. For many of our campers, the Demonstration Farm is more than just a program rotation—it’s a place where they make new friends, furry and feathered. Each year, Frogeye Farm, a local farm in Daviston, AL, generously lends Camp ASCCA a variety of animals, giving our campers the chance to experience farm life up close in a way that feels both exciting and comforting.

The Demo Farm has become one of the most anticipated activities of the summer. It’s not hard to see why. For some campers, it’s their very first time feeding a goat or holding a chicken. For others, it’s a return to familiar faces, that they’ve been waiting all year to see again. Campers spend their time feeding, petting, and learning more about each of these special animals, with our staff sharing fun facts and stories along the way. It’s an experience that blends education with pure joy.

It’s exciting to watch as a camper’s face lights up when a goat is eating from their hand, or getting to hold a fluffy bunny. The laughter, the squeals, and the quiet moments of connection all remind us why the Demo Farm is such an important part of camp life. And we might be biased, but we’re pretty sure the animals enjoy their time here just as much as the campers do, they get an endless supply of attention, love, and snacks!

Personal space? Charles has never heard of it.

This summer, our animal family included a cow, a sheep, goats, bunnies, and plenty of chickens. Each one brought their own personality and charm!

We are so deeply grateful for the relationship we’ve built with Frogeye Farm and with Jody Hodnett. His generosity and willingness to share his beloved animals with us year after year is something we never take for granted. It’s no small thing to prepare and care for these animals, transport them to camp, and trust them in our care for the summer, and yet, Jody does it with a smile and a heart for our mission.

The Demo Farm adds a unique joy to camp that can’t be replicated. These animals help create moments of courage for campers who might be nervous at first, moments of pride for those who learn something new, and moments of pure happiness for everyone involved. As we say goodbye to our four-legged and feathered friends, we’re already looking forward to welcoming them back next summer.
