Love, the ASCCA Way: Jerry & Cheryl’s Beginning

Over the past 50 years, Camp ASCCA has grown and accomplished more than we ever could have imagined. It’s a place where everyone belongs, where memories are made, and where love is shared each day. For some, that love becomes something more than friendship. Camp ASCCA has a special way of bringing people together, whether for a single week or a lifetime. In our limited series, “Love, the ASCCA Way,” we share stories that began at Camp and blossomed into meaningful, lasting relationships.

For five decades, Camp ASCCA has been a place where moments matter. What may seem small at the time, a conversation in passing, a shared responsibility, a simple introduction, often becomes part of a much bigger story. Time and again, we have watched simple beginnings turn into lifelong friendships, partnerships, and families.

The story of Jerry and Cheryl is one of those beginnings.

Jerry Bynum served as Camp ASCCA’s administrator from December 1977 to January 2004, helping guide and shape Camp through decades of growth. In November 1980, three college students from the Columbus, Georgia area came to meet with Jerry and Tom to plan a weekend retreat for their campers. One of those students was Cheryl Magoni.

By the summer of 1981, Cheryl had joined the Camp ASCCA staff as our pool director, and that is where their story truly began.

Jerry and Cheryl were married on September 11, 1982. What started at Camp ASCCA has grown into 44 years of marriage, a honeymoon that, in their words, “has not ended.” Along the way, they have welcomed three children, two sons-in-law, and three grandchildren into their family.

Today, they live on Lake Martin and continue to enjoy watching Camp ASCCA grow and change, just as it has done for so many years. Their story is a reminder that Camp ASCCA is more than a place. It’s where lives intertwine, families begin, and legacies are built.
