Each day this week, I will be focusing on one individual from our program staff that is a part of our aquatics staff here at Camp ASCCA. Today, I will tell you a little about Maggie Barnard.
Maggie is from New Albany, Mississippi, and this summer is her third summer working at Camp ASCCA. Maggie has worked at Camp for the past two summers as a PSIT, and that stands for program staff in training. This summer will be Maggie’s first full summer at Camp. Maggie has joined our aquatics team, so it is safe to say that all of her hard work in the past two summers has paid off. When I asked Maggie, why she wanted to join aquatics, she said, “I started out as a lifeguard when I was PSIT, and when I finally got the chance to become full time program staff, I knew aquatics was for me.”
When it comes to Maggie’s favorite aquatics activity, she enjoys riding in the boat that pulls the tube that the campers ride on. “Nothing can beat the reaction on the campers faces, when they are tubing,” she added. It is always interesting to see how people end up at ASCCA, and Maggie has a pretty neat story on how she found out about Camp. Maggie told me, “I grew up coming to Camp ASCCA volunteering with my family since I was seven years old. We volunteered during user camp weeks and when a full time staff approached me about working here, I could not pass that opportunity up.”
Outside of Camp, Maggie is about to start her first year of college at the University of South Alabama. She is going to major in Therapeutic Recreation, and after college, she plans to work with adolescents with spinal cord injuries. For anyone who knows Maggie, I think you will agree with me when I say that she is a kind hearted person. We wish nothing but the best to Maggie as Camp ASCCA starts, and we thank her for all of the hard work she has done here at Camp.
