Each day this week, I will be focusing on one individual from our program staff that is a part of our adventure staff here at Camp ASCCA. Today I will tell you a little about Michael Padalino.
Yesterday, I had the chance to sit down with Michael and learn a little more about him and his time working at Camp ASCCA. Michael is from Tuscaloosa, Alabama, and this is his second summer working for Camp ASCCA. Last summer, Michael was a camp counselor, but this summer, Michael joined our program staff team. More specifically, he is a part of our adventure staff. During our talk, I asked Michael why he wanted to do adventure staff and he provided several reasons.
One of the biggest is that the adventure program (and our other programs) here at Camp is accessible to everyone. He added that “the adventure program is set up for the convenience of any camper that comes to Camp ASCCA.” When I asked Michael if he enjoyed being a counselor or part of the adventure staff more, he said “ I really enjoy adventure staff because I get to spend time with all of the campers, but being a counselor allowed me to create more of a personal connection with the campers that were in my group.”
Outside of Camp ASCCA, Michael is a student at the University of Alabama, where he graduates in August with a degree in Human Environmental Sciences. Michael says that he is the biggest Alabama football fan to ever walk the grounds of Camp ASCCA, so be sure to quiz Michael on his Alabama football history when you come to Camp. The adventure staff has a lot to offer at Camp but Michael’s favorite is the high ropes course, and when asked why, he said, “ It is the most challenging thing we have. It is not about finishing the course but the effort the camper takes to finish the course.”
Even though he has only worked one prior summer, Michael still has a lot of memories from Camp. His favorite memory was “week seven of 2017 at the OutPost when a camper laughed for the first time all week.” It is memories like this one that brought Michael back to Camp, and we can not thank Michael enough for making Camp ASCCA such a fun and adventurous experience.
