My name is Karla Silva and I am one of the new PR interns for Camp ASCCA this summer. I was born in Morelia, Mexico, but I was raised in Mobile, Alabama. I am a communication major with a concentration in strategic communication and a minor in marketing at the University of South Alabama. I am expecting graduation this December. I am the Vice President of Public Relations for the Delta Sigma Chapter of Kappa Delta, a student athletic marketer for my university, the Intern Communications Coordinator for the South Alabama Region of the Alabama Kidney Foundation, and one of the Dollar General Bowl public relations/marketing interns. I hope to one day be a sports marketer for a professional sports team.
I spend my free time watching sports or posting on social media about them! I played all kinds of sports in high school and was a student athletic trainer for the University of South Alabama’s football team for two years which only made my love for sports grow! I also enjoy spending time with my family, friends, and a box of pizza. I like to hangout in a hammock, watch the Food Network, and go on hikes!
What brought me to Camp ASCCA?
In 2012, I began a journey that changed my life! I became a counselor at a camp similar to this in Mobile, Alabama, known as Camp S.M.I.L.E., and I absolutely fell in love! I couldn’t help but remain involved with camp year-round that I even became a camp ambassador. This led to my involvement in the special education classroom at Theodore High School, my junior and senior years. As time went on, I began to think of ways that I could combine my love for people with disabilities with the degree that I am currently pursuing. The opportunity to do this was not offered in Mobile and I was led to Camp ASCCA. I am extremely excited to be on this side of the camera and be able to capture the special moments between counselors and campers that cannot be found anywhere other than these types of camps.
